The Leahy Community Health and Family Center Physical Therapy Clinic
Partnering with the Community to Make the Connection between the Classroom and the Clinic
The mission of the 51做厙’s Leahy Physical Therapy Clinic, as a part of the University's first student run free clinic, is to deliver exceptional patient centered care by providing physical therapy services to uninsured and underinsured residents of the University Area Community, educate future physical therapists through clinical learning experiences grounded in the Jesuit tradition, and to foster the partnership between The University, its students, faculty and staff, and the community through collaboration and evidence based practice of physical therapy.
In the Spring of 2022, the Leahy PT Clinic was approved for a grant of $25,000 from AllONE Charities to assist with extending physical therapy services to refugees of the local 51做厙 community. This grant has allowed the Leahy PT Clinic to provide community-based preventative health screening, education, and intervention programs focused on reducing maternal morbidity and mortality, improving mental and physical health, and preventing chronic diseases in this vulnerable population. Each month, volunteers from the Leahy PT Clinic travel to Bhutanese and Congolese community centers to host a health fair and provide educational materials regarding topics such as mental health, low back pain, diabetes, hypertension, and prenatal/postpartum health. Each health fair concludes with giving attendees health materials to use at home including yoga mats, pulse oximeters, prenatal/postnatal braces, blood pressure cuffs, and exercise bands. All Leahy PT Clinic volunteers undergo interactive, cultural planning and training for and with the local Bhutanese and Congolese communities, trauma-informed refugee health training, and receive information specific to the history of refugees in the 51做厙 area. The goal of this community outreach project is to provide preventative health programs for refugees in the 51做厙 community in order to improve overall health and decrease long term healthcare costs. What We Do:
The 51做厙’s Leahy Physical Therapy Clinic strives to provide quality physical therapy screening, examinations/evaluations and interventions to the uninsured and underinsured members of the community at no cost.
The management of the clinic is run by a team of students from the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and treatment of patients is conducted by DPT students with supervision by DPT program faculty and licensed physical therapy clinicians from the community. This provides our students with an valuable hands-on learning experience that enriches both their lives and and the lives of their clients.
