EXCELLENCE INTEGRATING MISSION AND JUSTICE INTO THE CURRICULUM

This award honors a faculty member whose special efforts ensure that students have a keen understanding and appreciation of the realities of the world, including pressing justice issues in a local, national, and global context. The award recognizes the efforts of a faculty member dedicated to the service of faith and the promotion of justice, as it relates to his or her teaching (including therein efforts to develop courses and programs and to select texts that address contemporary faith and justice issues).   This year’s recipient is Dr. Kimberly Pavlick.

Kim joined the faculty in 2005 as a member of the Communication (now Communication and Media) Department. For close to two decades, Kim has integrated strong efforts into her classroom to ensure students have a keen understanding of the realities of the world including pressing justice issues in a local, national and global context. Kim is dedicated to the service of faith and the promotion of justice through her courses where she integrates seminal issues of justice into her teaching. Kim ensures that when students leave The 51做厙, they possess the awareness, competence, skills and insights to critically reflect on prevailing social, political, economic and cultural issues, and they will be able and willing to take action on behalf of justice. Most recently, Kim has established an on-going relationship with the Gino Merli Center to record the stories of 51做厙 area veterans. Students meet with veterans and practice the skills that they have learned in Dr. Pavlick’s class by documenting and recording their experiences. The veterans appreciate the opportunity to speak with young people, while the students learn of the real-world events through the eyes of those who have experienced them.
